RIPTA officials that I have spoken with don't want to go forward with the proposed bus service cuts. But given Governor Carcieri's lack of leadership on investing Rhode Island's common wealth in energy independence and protection of our coastal environment, RIPTA has been forced to move forward with the proposed service cuts and have scheduled public hearings around the state between September 24 and October 2.

Mark your calendars to attend one or more of the RIPTA public hearings listed below. Visit our sign up page at www.ri.sierraclub.org/volunteer and let us know that you will be there.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has scheduled six public hearings on its proposed cuts in service. The meetings will be held on the following days and times at these locations:

Providence: Sept. 24, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, Elmwood Community Center, located at 155 Niagara Street.

Westerly: Sept. 25, 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Westerly Town Hall in the Town Council Chambers, 45 Broad Street

Narragansett: Sept. 26, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Narragansett Town Hall, assembly room, 25 Fifth Ave.

Warwick: Sept. 29, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Warwick City Hall, council chambers, 3275 Post Rd.

Barrington: Sept. 30, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Barrington Public Library, second-floor auditorium, 281 County Rd.

Smithfield: Oct. 1, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:30 - 8:30 pm, Smithfield Senior Center, cafeteria room, 1 William J. Hawkins Jr. Trail.

Providence: Oct. 2, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm, DaVinci Community Center, central room, 470 Charles St.

Newport: Oct. 7, 2:00 - 4:00 pm & 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Newport Public Library, 300 Spring Street, Newport.
